Town and Country Hotel
The Town and Country Hotel in the Sydney suburb of St Peters is a classic suburban Sydney pub that rose to fame in 1980 when Australian country superstar Slim Dusty recorded the song “Duncan”. Contrary to popular belief, Slim didn’t write the lines “I love to have a beer with Duncan” or “We drink at the Town and Country, where the atmosphere is great”. That claim goes to the aspiring songwriter Pat Alexander, who send Slim a demo in 1980. Pat wrote the song way back in the mid 70s after becoming friends at the pub with a bloke named Duncan who worked nearby. Slim did eventually meet and have a beer with Duncan at the Town and Country in 1981 after his song became an Australian hit.
Today the pub is a popular hangout with the locals as well as a few tourists who like to pop in to say they have drank at the Town and Country. The pub features regular bands pool tables and a cheap selection of pub meals. The Town and Country Hotel is located on the Corner of Unwins Bridge Road and Campbell Street in St Peters NSW and is about a five-minute walk from St Peters Railway Station.
